W14London Community Website for W14 & SW6 reviews TASTE restaurant
I recently had lunch with Ann a friend at Taste Restaurant which is on Talgath Road.
We were welcomed by Sylvain Auger who showed us to our table. The restaurant has recently been refurbished in neutral tones and it retains its light, airy and peaceful atmosphere. The majority of other diners were local residents. To start I had a Tuscan vegetable salad which would have been enhanced with some Tuscan beans. Ann had chicken liver salad
followed by Vienna steak with onions, salad and chunky chips. I had Chicken Kiev with red pepper pilaff and broccoli. Absolutely delicious. All the staff were professional but our waitress Priscilla really excelled and was kind and attentive.
Sylvain told us the meat is bought from the butcher H G Walters of 51 Palliser Road, Barons Court, W14 who supply the River Cafe. Other fans of the butcher include Michael Winner who writes for the Sunday Times, Nigella Lawson and Terry Venables.
Then after a brief rest Ann had fig tart with creme Anglais and I had the apple pie with custard. I tried both and the fig tart was outstanding.
We did not have any alcohol but a look at the drinks list shows wine from Europe, Australia, South America and South Africa. Prices start at ?8.50 per bottle or ?1.85 for a small glass. A bottle of Laurent Perrier NV Champagne is ?24.50 per bottle.
Taste Restaurant is run by catering students who are studying for an NVQ1 Professional Chef qualification at the Hammersmith Campus of Ealing, Hammersmith & West London College - on the corner of Talgarth Road and Gliddon Road. The restaurant seats 60 but accommodates up to 100 for a private function. Once you are seated in the restaurant you cannot hear the Talgarth Road. Occasionally celebrity chefs and television companies use the restaurant and kitchen. It was home to the first series of Gordon Ramsay's Hells Kitchen. Brian Turner and Anthony Worrall Thompson have staged Breakfast Challenges there.
We had the set menu at ?7.95 but individual main courses are all under ?5.00. that is unbeatable value. Mark Clements the Interim Divisional Manager said "it is W14's best kept secret" and Sylvain Auger who is the Food Service and Management Lecturer speaks passionately about the course and the students who he says"need motivation and an
understanding that cooking is a vocation".
Coffees and tea are served from 10.30am Lunches served from 12.00pm Last orders 1.30pm.. Monday to Friday and are open on Tuesday & Thursday evenings ?10.95 for set dinner menu. Bar opens at 18.00 and dinner served 18.15 (last order 19:15pm).
The table menu sums it up perfectly "to achieve success takes education @ wlc". If you are interested in doing a course then contact the college on 020 8741 1688 or email cic@wlc.ac.uk
