English as a Foreign Language
Methodology
The course will develop the four skills of language learning: reading, listening, speaking and writing. In developing reading skills, you are given practice in reading for gist (quick reading for essential information) and also in reading for more detailed comprehension. Practice in these skills also applies to listening. In speaking, you will be encouraged to reproduce language that you have learnt and to increase your fluency by working in pairs and groups. Other times you will be working individually or together with the whole class. For writing, you will be given instruction and practice in how to compose formal and informal texts, transactional letters, narrative and descriptive texts. You will also learn to use the necessary linking devices to construct coherent writing.
Homework
Homework will generally be set after each day’s work. There will be written homework at least once a week. Other homework will typically involve grammar, vocabulary or reading exercises and will be corrected in class.
Evaluation
Students are given formal and informal feedback on their progress on a regular basis. Written work will be marked to give guidance on progress. You will also have the opportunity to give your opinion about the course through informal discussion with course tutors and written questionnaires.
Materials
Classes will use a mixture of materials prepared by the lecturers as well as textbooks. You will be required to buy the textbook and a workbook. You will also need to supply your own stationary.
Absence and Attendance
The College expects you to attend 100% of your classes. Only this way can we guarantee your progress and success in examinations. If you are unable to attend, please inform your tutor in advance. Non-attendance will affect your student visa extension application.
